Teachers Day 2026 Date and Significance

When is Teachers Day 2026?

Teachers Day 2026 will be celebrated in India on September 5, 2026. The day falls on a Saturday this year.

September 5 is observed as Teachers Day in India because it is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a renowned philosopher, scholar, teacher and former President of India. He was born on September 5, 1888. According to the official President of India profile, Radhakrishnan served as the country’s second President from 1962 to 1967 and had a distinguished career in education and philosophy.

The occasion is not simply about celebrating one individual. It is an opportunity to recognise the wider contribution of teachers and educators who help students develop knowledge, skills, values and confidence.

Why is Teachers Day celebrated on September 5?

India celebrates Teachers Day on September 5 to honour Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and his contribution to education and philosophy.

The tradition began in 1962, when Radhakrishnan was serving as President. A Government of India feature records that when people wanted to celebrate his birthday, he suggested that the day instead be dedicated to teachers and the teaching profession.

That idea gave September 5 a broader meaning. Rather than being only a birthday celebration, it became a day dedicated to appreciating teachers across the country.

Quick fact: India’s Teachers Day on September 5 is different from World Teachers’ Day, which is observed internationally on October 5. UNESCO says World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994 and commemorates the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

Why Teachers Day Is Celebrated in India

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan remains closely associated with education and teaching in India. Born in 1888, he went on to become a respected philosopher, academic and statesman.

Before entering the highest constitutional offices of the country, Radhakrishnan built a significant academic career. The official President of India profile notes that he taught at institutions including the University of Mysore and the University of Calcutta and later held the Spalding Professorship of Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford.

He served as India’s first Vice President from 1952 to 1962 and then became the country’s second President, serving until 1967.

His life is therefore closely connected with both education and public service.

His Contribution to Education

Radhakrishnan believed strongly in the transformative power of education. His work in philosophy and comparative religion helped introduce Indian philosophical thought to wider audiences, while his years as an educator reflected his commitment to learning.

The official President of India profile describes him as a distinguished scholar and philosopher whose influence extended across India’s educational and political landscape.

Teachers Day therefore serves as a reminder of the larger purpose of education. A teacher’s role is not limited to completing a syllabus. Teachers can help students develop curiosity, independent thinking, discipline, confidence and a sense of responsibility.

Importance of Teachers in Students’ Lives

A good teacher can become one of the most memorable people in a student’s life.

Teachers explain difficult concepts, encourage students when they struggle and often recognise potential that students themselves may not see. Their influence can extend beyond the classroom, particularly when they act as mentors and role models.

In her Teachers Day 2026 message, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the role of teachers in nurturing talent and strengthening character. She also emphasised the importance of encouraging independent thinking and curiosity among students.

That makes Teachers Day more than a ceremonial occasion. It is a chance to acknowledge the people who contribute to shaping future generations.

Teachers Day Cards and Images

Teachers Day cards and images are among the easiest ways to send a greeting, particularly through WhatsApp, Instagram Stories and Facebook.

A digital Teachers Day card can include:

A “Happy Teachers Day 2026” headline
A short thank-you message
The teacher’s name
A simple education-themed design
Books, pens, classroom or graduation-themed visuals
A personal note from the student

For WhatsApp Status or Instagram Stories, keep the message short enough to read quickly. A simple line such as “Thank you for inspiring us to learn and grow. Happy Teachers Day!” can work better than a long paragraph.

1. Send a Personal Message

4. Share a Social Media Tribute

Students can post a respectful Teachers Day message or photograph with a caption thanking their teachers.

5. Participate in School or College Celebrations

Teachers Day celebrations may include cultural programmes, speeches, performances, presentations and other activities.

The Government of India also recognises outstanding educators through the National Teachers Awards, administered under the Ministry of Education. The National Teachers Awards website says the awards were instituted in 1958 and are presented on September 5 to recognise meritorious teachers.
